Staying at the Riu Caribe Cancun

As last minute bookings go Mr B and I recently hit the jackpot with a stay at the Riu Caribe. We were looking for a week of R&R and when looking at holidays and a week in Mexico staying at the Riu Caribe appeared, we snapped it up.

The hotel, which has been closed for a large part of this year for renovation, was open for only two weeks before our stay. Our first impressions after a long day travelling were extremely good indeed. We were welcomed into the light and airy reception, our cases taken from us and refreshing drink handed to us whilst we did the smooth and quick check-in. Fifteen minutes later we were in our room!

The hotel offers several varieties of rooms – we stayed in an ocean view suite. We loved the room, the décor was modern, the room spacious, light and airy and the balcony, oh the balcony, was special.

The king size bed was a dream to sleep in and there wasn’t one night Mr B and I didn’t have a great night’s sleep.

We had plenty of wardrobe and drawer space and there were charging points around the room including USB charging points next to the bed. The air-con was amazing and a welcome relief from the hot Mexican sun!

There was also a seating area in our room with a sofa and table.

Riu certainly know how to do a mini-bar! This is by far the most impressive, included mini-bar we have ever had! The full size spirit bottles on the wall were gin, tequila, vodka and rum – the optics gave the perfect measure.

The fridge contained coke, sprite, tonic and large bottles of water. There was also a coffee machine which we made use of most mornings whilst we watched the sun rise, a perfect way to wake up and greet a new day in Cancun! Not only was the mini-bar extremely impressive, but it was also fully restocked every other day.

The large bathroom had his-and-hers sinks which we both found really handy when getting ready. The huge shower had great water pressure and was always lovely and warm.

The star of our room, without a doubt, was the huge balcony. With two entrances out onto the balcony from our room it was the biggest balcony we have ever had. But the views, oh my word, were beautiful.

Waking up in the morning, sitting on our balcony watching the sunrise is one of those special moments you know you will never forget.

But no matter what time of day our balcony always guaranteed us beautiful views, from dusk till dawn. From views of the beach to overlooking the hotel’s pools, to enjoying seeing everything twinkling at night time.

Away from our room we were spoiled with things to do in our hotel. Every day there were activities from fitness classes like circuit training and aqua aerobics to the energetic fun of volleyball, to the not so energetic bingo, quizzes and ping pong. I highly recommend downloading the Riu app. It gives you easy access to the daily programmes which tells you everything happening around the hotel including the locations and times. Although there are many activities and experiences around the hotel I have to be honest . . . Mr B and I spent our days mostly relaxing!

There are three pools around the resort and we spent time at each one of them.

There were always plenty of sun loungers around the pools and also plenty of areas for getting some shade.

All the pools were a lovely temperature and very refreshing.

Our favourite pool, well it had to be the one with the swim-up bar of course! The service was always quick and friendly and we loved the variety of seating on offer in the pool.

When we weren’t relaxing by the pool we could usually be found on the beautiful beach.

It was like a picture postcard beach, powder soft white sand and crystal clear blue waters.

Every day the hardworking team even raked up and moved the seaweed that morning that the tide had bought in, now that is service!

Talking of the team, it was not just the beach which was well maintained but the entire hotel. The beautifully manicured grounds were always being tendered to and looked after. When we went for drinks and dinner, we never came across a table which had not been cleared.

The hotel itself was spotless, it really felt like the team were happy to work there and took pride in their new surroundings.

One of the new offerings by the newly-opened Riu Caribe is the ‘Riu Party’. There are four themed parties a week, two starting in the day and two starting in the evenings. These are adults only and all held in the private Riu party area which is used exclusively for the parties.

The fun starts in the hotel where the entertainment team set up in reception to do face painting to match the theme of the party. The themes are white, neon, jungle and pink and there are two pools in the party area, one with a swim-up bar and one in front of the DJ booth. There are separate bars from the swim-up and also a dedicated shot bar, which we may have gone to a few too many times!

We went to two of the parties and . . . wow! They were crazy but in an amazing, fun way! The themes are very well done by the team, from the fabulous outfits, the decorations to the dancers on the podiums. These parties are all about having fun and we certainly did!
